Sometimes insight isn’t enough to help you feel better

You may be thoughtful, capable, and accustomed to handling difficult things on your own. You may have spent years trying to understand yourself through reflection, reading, prayer, or previous therapy. And yet, something still isn’t changing.

You might be:

  • Analyzing everything while your body remains anxious or on alert
  • Repeating relationship patterns you recognize but cannot seem to change
  • Carrying the effects of painful experiences from your past
  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unlike yourself
  • Struggling with grief, a life transition, or questions about identity or faith

You don’t need to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. We can start with what feels most difficult right now and work together to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

Counseling that makes room for your whole experience

I provide individual counseling for adults age 18 and older. I commonly help people with:

These concerns rarely exist in isolation. Anxiety may be connected to earlier experiences. Relationship struggles may involve protective patterns you developed long ago. A difficult transition may bring deeper questions about identity, faith, or meaning to the surface.

Therapy gives us room to explore these connections without reducing you to a diagnosis or treating you like a problem to be fixed. Together, we can help you understand yourself more fully and move toward greater steadiness, connection, self-trust, and freedom.

What therapy with me is like

My style is warm, grounded, curious, and interactive. I listen carefully, ask meaningful questions, reflect patterns, and offer honest observations when they may be helpful. You won’t be expected to carry the entire conversation by yourself.

We may explore early experiences, family dynamics, unspoken beliefs, or protective responses that once helped you but now get in the way. We will also pay attention to what is already strong and alive in you—the parts that continue to hope, care, connect, and reach for something better.

My approach is relational and insight-oriented, incorporating ideas and tools attachment theory, coaching, and Internal Family Systems-informed therapy. I draw from these approaches according to your needs rather than forcing every client into one method.

Meet Matt

I’m a licensed mental health counselor with more than 15 years of experience. I work especially well with reflective, emotionally aware people who want more than quick advice or a temporary solution.

I offer steady presence, thoughtful guidance, and a relationship where you can be honest about the complicated parts of your life. I won’t rush your process or shrink from your pain. I will also help you recognize the strength, resilience, humor, and capacity for joy that can be difficult to see when you are struggling.

Faith is welcome in our work if it matters to you. You can bring belief, doubt, anger, hope, or church-related pain into therapy without being pushed toward easy spiritual answers. Clients of all faith backgrounds, as well as clients who do not identify as religious, are equally welcome.

In-person and online therapy

I offer in-person counseling from my office in Fairhaven, Bellingham, along with secure online therapy throughout Washington State.

Reaching out doesn’t commit you to therapy. Send me a brief message about what you’re looking for, and I’ll let you know about my availability, your insurance options, and how to schedule an initial appointment.
